Dylan van Baarle rode to fifth place in the tenth stage of the
Tour de France. He was part of the breakaway and finished 10 seconds behind stage winner Magnus Cort.
"I felt pretty good the whole day," Van Baarle told NOS. "I knew I had to gamble a bit at the end, and I tried. I came back to the three and tried to get it right, but I didn't really get a gap. The legs were filling up. The other group came back, and then it was over."
The race was disrupted due to protests by climate activists 35 kilometers from the finish line. "It was a bit crazy. It was good that we could get a water bottle and eat something. Maybe we should do that more often. I don't know exactly what was going on. We stopped and then went on again," said van Baarle.
He also commented on the increase of Covid infection in the tour, particularly with the UAE Emirates team. "We didn't really talk about it. I only heard about it on the way to the start. If it continues like this, it doesn't look good. I don't know the ins and outs of that team. I hope they stay healthy and we get a fair fight," concluded van Baarle.
