Koen Bouwman, the Dutch rider of Jumbo Visma, will not be competing in the Vuelta a España in August.
Bouwman and teammates Sam Oomen and Mike Teunissen appeared on the television show De Avondetappe on Monday. He was asked about his preparation for Vuelta a España to which he replied, "In principle, I will not be at the start. I am the last rider to be dropped. It was between
Edoardo Affini and me. The team chose Edoardo because there are quite a few flat stages. So I will ride a slightly different program," he revealed.
It comes as a surprise since he has already demonstrated his capabilities with two-stage victories in Giro d’Italia a few weeks ago. He was the first Dutch rider to win the mountain jersey. He is currently staying in the French town of Tignes for an altitude training course.
