The opening stage of the
Saudi Tour was expected to be battled between the sprinters, but it ended up being more of a controlled day where
Dylan Groenewegen took an unchallenged victory in the final sprint for home team Jayco AlUla.
The opening day of the race proved to be harder than it seemed on paper, with the strong heat and wind making it very complicated for some of the riders, including Pascal Ackermann who is suffering from illness.
The day's breakaway never stood many chances, and the final survivor Marcus Hansen was caught with 13 kilometers to go. The tension kept growing towards the finale with a crashing just outside the final kilometer.
Team Jayco AlUla had the main favourite and the responsibility to deliver and they managed to get Dylan Groenewegen in prime position for the sprint. When the Dutchman launched his move he immediately got a gap and took an easy stage win in front of
Dusan Rajovic and
Max Walscheid.
