Demi Vollering was unable to follow up her successful Tour de France at the World Time Trial Championships. In Stirling she came no further than sixth place, more than minute from winner and 15 seconds from podium.
"At first I thought I was okay, but then I kind of fell off," she told NOS. ¨"I just didn't have it today. On the climb I squeezed out everything that was in it, but yes… not good enough today. It hurts even more now. Sometimes you can kick it, but it hurts less. Sometimes it's almost more painful if you don't make it. Today was tough."
"Sometimes, on the climbs, I still tried to pull it dirty. I thought: maybe I can make up for something here. But when I looked at my wattmeter, I already knew: unless the others are also bad today, I know that this is not enough."
"What makes the course so tough? That first long straight… I don't know. But that asphalt doesn't roll for one meter either. So on that last straight I also tried to go left to right to find a spot where the curve was better, but I just couldn't make any progress."
