The use of Ketones has become for the last few years a debate within pro cycling in relation to the teams that use it and those who don't, with claims of substantial performance enhancement. However, currently not being a banned substance, it is of free use - with developments soon to come.
It was said by De Limburger that the UCI is set to make a statement soon on ketones, although with no indications on whether it can become a banned product or if the evidence shown supports the use of it without causing collateral health problems.
In an interview, MPCC (Movement For Credible Cycling) chairman Roger Legeay has issued the following statement: "The problem with ketones is that we know too little. We don't know who uses it, how many riders are taking it, whether it improves performance, and what the long-term effects are. We do know that some riders get stomach problems. Then why would you use them? Are they necessary for health? I do not think so."
The debate between the MPCC and non-MPCC teams has been ongoing, with ketones being a banned substance for those who look to be a part of the union - with 9, or 50% of World Tour teams being included. Several teams are open about their usage of ketones, not being a banned substance it has caused a spark between those who argue it should become one.
