Climb that decided last year's Il Lombardia at risk of being removed last-minute due to landslide

The route of the 2024 Il Lombardia was decided and confirmed a few weeks ago but a literal last-minute change is now expected. Landslides have affected the Passo di Ganda and most likely the ascent will be removed from the route after this week's heavy rainfall.

A picture shared by ValSerianews shows the effects on a landslide on the descent of the climb that has often been used in recent years, and was the decisive climb of the race both in 2021 and 2023. This is the Passo di Ganda, which is on the route once again in 2024, but much earlier in the race.

The picture shows several cracks on the road and although it is still possible to pass, questions regarding safety are understandably posed. Specially after the criticism that has fallen over the UCI over the past few weeks, there will be a lot of pressure to make a change even if this was not the initial plan.

The climb to the Passo di Ganda this year would be the first main climb of the day, 9.4 kilometers at 7% but over 200 kilometers away from the finish. It has been suggested that although the ascent may be removed, it could be replaced by one of similar characteristics in Selvino which is very close-by, and is over 10 kilometers long at 5.5%.
