Chris Froome optimistic upon return to Tour Down Under: "we can hit the ground running with some great results"

It can't be said that Chris Froome will be leading Israel - Premier Tech at the Tour Down Under, however as the team reveal their lineup the former Tour de France winner is certainly the headliner, and he carries big expectations into his 2023 season debut.

"I’m really excited to be returning to Adelaide for the Santos Tour Down Under for only the second time in my career," the Briton said in a press release for Israel - Premier Tech. "The race has changed a lot since I was there in 2010, getting bigger and better each year, to now be one of the most important races on the cycling calendar."

Simon Clarke, Tour de France stage winner last year and second at the Australian national championships this weekend should be leading the team, however the Israeli team brings in aswell two-time race winner Daryl Impey and Corbin Strong as outsiders for the overall classification. A strong team for the start of the season in a race that suits the puncheurs.

"I know the Aussie fans are some of the best in the world so I can’t wait to be back on their home soil and have them cheer us on. We have a strong team and I think we can hit the ground running with some great results," Froome said. The terrain won't be favourable to him, however he is likely to be playing a supporting role for the team's leaders.

Sebastian Berwick, Taj Jones and new signing Derek Gee complete the lineup for the now ProTeam level squad.
