British Cycling CEO steps down after controversial Shell deal

After a turbulent year for the national cycling organization, British Cycling's CEO has stepped down with immediate effect by mutual agreement with the board of directors.

When British Cycling announced Shell would be the official partner of Great Britain's cyclists and para-cyclists, they faced backlash. National media outlets covered the partnership, along with Greenpeace's condemnation.

The organization also faced backlash in April when it reversed its policy on transgender athletes competing in the competition. On the day of Queen Elizabeth II's funeral, it also suggested cyclists not ride outdoors, which was not well received.

Cycling delivery director Danielle Every will fill the position temporarily while the search for a new CEO is underway. There is no specific timeframe for when the new CEO will be appointed, but Chairman Frank Slevin says, "Our new CEO will join the organisation at an exciting time as we build towards next year's inaugural UCI Cycling World Championships in Scotland and the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024."
