Biniam Girmay forced out of Paris-Roubaix after Flanders concussion: "A shame, because I had the feeling that Bini got better every race"

Biniam Girmay's spring had been difficult and unfortunately it may be over. He crashed hard at the Tour of Flanders and suffered a concussion due to it, and will be forced to delay his Paris-Roubaix debut as he is not yet recovered.

“He would have loved to ride Paris-Roubaix, but in the given circumstances that is not doable,” Intermarché-Circus-Wanty DS Hilaire Van der Schueren said in an interview with Het Nieuwsblad. “The question is how fast the concussion is evolving because the Amstel Gold Race is already on the program next Sunday. Basically this was the last race of Bini's spring. He would then head back to Eritrea to prepare for his Tour de France debut. A shame, because I had the feeling that Bini got better every race.”

After preparing for the spring classics Girmay returned to Europe in early March. He showed promising legs at Tirreno-Adriatico where he sprinted to good results but couldn't translate that into the cobbles as was the case in 2022. There Girmay won Gent-Wevelgem and finished fifth at the E3 Saxo Classic. However this spring he couldn't, crashing and abandoning at E3, struggling with the rough weather condition in Wevelgem, and eventually coming down in Flanders.

His spring campaign may be over due to the recently suffered injuries but that is not yet certain. Amstel Gold Race is in his calendar and as Van der Schueen mentions his participation depends on the coming week and how fast he can recover.
