Alexander Kristoff takes the inaugural stage of Volta ao Algarve. The Uno-X Pro Cycling Team rider topped Jordi Meeus and teammate Soren Waerenskjold in a bunch sprint.
The Uno-X new face for this season begins to showing that his transfer to the team was a good move since Kristoff took advantage of his teammate's leadout to win against riders like Fabio Jakobsen and Jordi Meeus.
5 riders formed the breakaway in this opening stage with António Ferreira of Kelly/Simoldes/UDO becoming the first leader of the mountain's classification with the last member of the break being caught around 11 km to go. Despite some difficulties along the stage, the peloton paced in a comfortable rhythm for the sprinters.
All ended in a fight for the positioning of their respective sprinters by the teams with fast men's. Groupama-FDJ took control of the last km until the last 300 meters where Uno-X team did an amazing leadout to his sprinter, the veteran Alexander Kristoff who showed that the veterans can still win in cycling.
Alexander Kristoff was the first to cross the finish line ahead of Jordi Meeus (Bora-Hansgrohe) and his teammate Soren Waerenskjold, becoming the first leader of this year edition of Volta ao Algarve.
