Mauri Vansevenant was a man with mixed emotions on the end of Stage 5 of Tour of Oman.
The Soudal-Quick-Step rider won the stage ahead of race leader Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar Team) and secured an important victory in his young career by conquering the Jabal Al Akhdar (Green Mountain) climb a 5.7 km mountain with an average of 10%
"It was first and foremost about the day's victory for me, but apparently I'm stranded at one second in the general classification. The final climb was really tough, especially the last two kilometres were extremely steep. It was every man for himself and I think the strongest won", Vansevenant told the reports in the post race interview.
Despite this great win, Vansevenant didn't achieve his other goal, the general classification victory, finishing in second place only 1 second behind Matteo Jorgenson who finished second in today's stage. The Belgian ambitioned more, and he isn't happy with the result, although he revels confidence for the next races.
"That's hugely unfortunate, but I have little to blame myself for. I did everything I could and fought until the end. I have to move on now. Of course, it's a shame to finish second in the final classification. I had hoped for a double, but the condition is good. I can go to the next races with confidence: the races in the Ardèche and then Strade Bianche.", Vansevenant concluded.
