Bauke Mollema has signed a four-year contract with Trek - Segafredo which will have him ride with the team until 2026. A surprising duration taking into account his age, however the relationship between both parties is very strong and that's the justification for the move.

“It’s been eight years now with the Team and I have felt really happy here since the very beginning and I still can’t imagine being anywhere else. I am really looking forward to staying with this team for the next few years. I’ve said it many times before, but it’s become like a family to me," Mollema said in a press release the team has released right after the end of the Giro d'Italia.

Mollema has been close to a stage win, but has had a bigger role protecting Juan Pedro López who led the race for ten days. Part of the American team since 2015, Mollema has finished on the Top10 of the Tour de France and twice at the Giro d'Italia. However he's consolidated himself as a stage hunter, netting two big wins at the Grand Boucle, aswell as classics such as Il Lombardia and Clásica San Sebastian.

“As everyone knows, my role has changed a little bit in the last years, and it will probably change more over the next few years. When I came to this team it was mainly as a GC rider, targeting the Tour in particular," Mollema said. "After doing that for many years, I started to focus on one day races and more recently, hunting stages in Grand Tours. I like that role and maybe, at this moment in my career, it fits me a bit better than going for the GC."

Another reason why the team have inked with Mollema for four seasons if for the mentoring approach that he will be capable of giving to developing stage-racers within the team. The likes of Juan Pedro López, Mattias Skjelmose and others that are to come in the future will benefit from his assistance.

“Now, we have young riders who are better able than me to go for the GC in Grand Tours and I see another part of my role as acting as somewhat of a mentor for them," he said.
