Taking place on the Italian island of Sicilia, home of some of the best riders of this generation in Italian cycling like Vincenzo Nibali and Damiano Caruso, the
Giro di Sicilia has today announced it's route for the 2022 edition.
The four day stage-race will take place from the 12th to 15th of April and will feature a set of stages suited to different types of riders, which is set to host a decent startlist despite being in such a crowded spot in the calendar. The opening day is purely for the sprinters as they ride from Milazzo to Bagheria as the riders will face the northern coast of the island all day long on that stage.
On stages two and three the race moves towards the center and south of the island for a set of hilly stages. The first one with a slight summit finish at Caltanissetta with an 8.5 kilometer long climb at an average of around 3%, which includes a flat section halfway, and will be the day where we'll be able to see who is in the race to fight for the win. Stage three isn't as complicated but the route from Realmonte to Piazza Armerina will have plenty of small climbs, it can finish in a reduced bunch sprint but the terrain is ideal for late attacks to succeed.
Finally, in the last day the peloton will ride up the Etna, the most active volcano in Europe. The race is also set to go up in flames as the queen stage features an ascent made in three parts, where the riders will go up from almost sea level to 1793 meters of altitude in the final 38 kilometers. The ascent has two downhill sections in it, but the final kilometers will be brutal as the peloton will face one of the longest ascents of the professional cycling season.
