France's Mathilde Gros was victorious in the Women's Sprint final at the UCI Track World Championships sparking joyous scenes on a level rarely witnessed in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.
French cycling has a new superstar and her name is Mathilde Gros. The 22-year-old first conclusively beat the reigning champion Emma Hinze in the semi final, before riding a wave of support from the French crowd to beat Hinze's German teammate Lea Friedrich to take the rainbow jersey.
Emma Hinze recovered from her semi final disappointment, emerging victorious from the bronze medal matchup. All the talk and rightly so however will be about this new French superstar and with the Paris Olympics less than 2 years away, Mathilde Gros will now be one of the hot favourites for gold.
