Tom Pidcock began his cyclocross season with good form and took an impressive victory in Namur, however he didn't get to enjoy more success afterwards. The presence of Mathieu van der Poel and al illness brought down his ambitions but also cut his block of racing short.
“My time in Belgium was three cyclocross races shorter than initially planned. That was because I wasn't myself," Pidcock said in an Instagram post. "I felt bad, battled illness after a training camp in December and was therefore unable to recover properly.”
He still finished on the podium of races such as Gavere and Diegem, but in Hulst a crash at the start of the race derailed his chances of a result. Days later in Baal he could only manage a 12th spot. The decision was then made over the next days to end his block of racing - more so because his chances of winning with full health were virtually the same as the World Champion remained unbeatable.
“I feel better now and am back on the bike," the Briton assures. "I will stay in white Andorra for a few more days before I head to sunny Spain. There I will continue to prepare for my road season and the last cross of my winter campaign, in Benidorm.”
