Wout van Aert takes on just his second cross of the winter this afternoon at Superprestige Gullegem Cross. With Mathieu van der Poel not present though, a significant chance for the Visma star to take victory emerges and falling on the 4th birthday of his son Georges too, there some extra incentive to cross the line first.
"It would be great to win," admits Van Aert in pre-race quotes collected by Het Nieuwsblad, although he insists, just being able to come and watch his father race is already a gift in and of it self for Georges. "He really likes that."
The question of whether Van Aert can take victory remains though. “It’s hard to say because it’s a very technical course and you have to get on and off the bike a lot. There’s a lot of mud. It’s a question mark how well I’m prepared for that, but the training went well this week," he previews. “I am starting here because I think it is a nice cross with a good atmosphere, and because it fits well into my program. I am not really focused on the victory. If that was my goal this winter, I should have ridden a lot more. I am very happy with where I am. My first cross in Loenhout went very well. Hopefully I can continue that today.”
