Fem van Empel remains unbeatable. Despite a great performance from Puck Pieterse, the World Champion soared to victory on the opening cyclocross World Cup round and has already asserted herself as the woman to beat on the field.
“I don't actually know what happened in the race. I didn't speed up, I just rode my own pace," the Dutchwoman said in a post-race interview. "I did hear that Puck Pieterse had been attacked by the audience. But I only rode my own race, that was enough."
It was a race without too much stress. Whilst in the first laps her young compatriot managed to match her, as the race went on the gaps grew and expanded and van Empel was clearly on a different level. It was a dominant with, with everyone else quite far off the top two. “I don't think it will always be like this," the Jumbo-Visma rider admits.
In fact she will take a different approach to the season this time around, and in a couple of weeks she will take time off the bike which means she may not aim at the victory in the World Cup. "I will take a rest after the European Championships, so I can relax for a while. I won't be riding all the crosses all season," van Empel concluded.
