"Everyone was equally strong, no one really stood out" - Joris Nieuwenhuis 'best of the rest' behind Mathieu van der Poel in Zonhoven

Joris Nieuwenhuis has been making his name as one of the premier cyclocross riders all winter and this continued on Sunday afternoon at the latest round of the UCI World Cup in Zonhoven.

As has become the custom in recent weeks, Mathieu van der Poel took a relatively comfortable victory. Behind him however the fighting was fierce with Nieuwenhuis eventually being the man to prove himself 'best of the rest' in second place.

“We were a group and everyone was equally strong, no one really stood out,” Nieuwenhuis stated post-race, referencing his rivals, Laurens Sweeck and Pim Ronhaar. “In the end, I think I made the right choices at the right times and that is why I came second. This year is a bit weird. All the races where I never rode well in recent years are now going really well. Gavere, Boom and the same here… I surprised myself a bit.”

The Baloise - Trek Lions star is quickly becoming one of the best riders in the sand. "I notice that I have trained on my cross bike all year long, even in the summer. You notice that on these types of courses," he concludes before casting an eye towards the upcoming Dutch National Championships. “We have three boys from our team who are doing well now. It will depend on the shape of the day who will win there."
