The first of the national road titles have been handed out in Australia, with Luke Plapp and Ruby Roseman-Gannon taking the win in the elite road races.
“I was just in a flow state. I wasn't really thinking. I think it's hard to get in that state but when you're there, it just happens,” reflected the 25-year-old in her post-race interview. “I didn't really know what I was thinking, but I kept saying diamonds in the legs to myself. I felt like I had diamonds in the legs. I don't know. I just had it today.”
Fighting off competition from the likes of Lauretta Hanson, Alexandra Manly and Grace Brown, Roseman-Gannon backed up her victory at the criterium championships earlier this week in stunning style.
“I just tried to be smart with my energy and sometimes being off the front is less energy than trying to follow Sarah Gigante up the climb,” she continues, referring to the 2019 champion who again tried her luck. "I have never been on the team with the jersey, so yeah, it's really, really special."
"I really want to target a big Classics block, so I'll do a combination of cobbled Classics and a couple of Ardennes,” she concludes, hoping that this can be the start of a productive season. “I think it suits my physiology and my riding style and having two years in the peloton a bit more confidence to ride the bunch. And now I've got the Australian jersey as well.”
