For third summit finish in a row, Adam Yates was front and centre of all the action at the 2024 Tour de Suisse, gaining time on all his rivals despite missing out on the stage win to his teammate, Joao Almeida.
"It was always the plan to go full gas with the team," the British leader of UAE Team Emirates reflects in his post-stage interview on the stage shortened to just over 40 kilometres thanks to bad weather. "We saw yesterday Joao was super strong and today he was also."
In his own post-stage interview, Almeida posed the theory that Yates had attacked from too far out on the final climb, when he launched his move with 3.5km still to go. "Maybe for myself, I went a little bit too early," Yates admits with a wry smile. "But yeah, I felt pretty good. In the end, Joao came across to me and he managed to drop me. Another super strong performance from the team and hopefully it will be more of the same tomorrow."
As mentioned, Yates gained time on his main general classification rivals such as Mattias Skjelmose and Egan Bernal but with Almeida lurking dangerously at just 27 seconds down, the Maillot Jaune seems likely to be heading to UAE Team Emirates, although which one of the duo isn't fully clear. "We knew from the start that it could be a good race for us. We're both in good shape and we're both fighting for the win," Yates assesses. "It's super nice for the team to be in this position and yeah, like I said, hopefully it's the same again tomorrow!"
"It should be a hard stage tomorrow, maybe the Queen Stage," Yates continues. "We start uphill and then it's all either down or up, there's no valleys. Tonight we'll have a little celebration again for that win and come again strong tomorrow."
