Despite positive signs for Jumbo-Visma, the best the team could manage in the women's Dutch National Championships road race was a distant third with Marianne Vos.
The eventual winner was Team SD Worx's Demi Vollering, with her teammate Lorena Wiebes coming home in second. "We were well on track, with Eva van Agt ahead. This allowed us to control behind it and to move along with counter-attacks. That worked out well, until Demi went," said the experienced Vos post-race to In de Leiderstrui. "She immediately took such a good gap that it could no longer be controlled."
"I don't think we were the favourite by definition, but it is always difficult to win a championship," continued the Jumbo-Visma leader, who is a four-time previous winner of the Dutch National Championships.
"The moment they have more than four minutes you start to believe they have a chance. I think that from SD Worx, with Marit Raaijmakers, they have taken control. It's also super tough in that heat," Vos explains referring to the hot weather that seemed to play a big part for a number of riders. "It's just warm and you notice that it costs energy, but you try to do as much as possible. We had a lot of bottle points and it is literally a matter of keeping a cool head."
