Speaking after taking the biggest win of his career so far at the Italian National Championships, an emotional Simone Velasco attributed his powerful final sprint to the support he has received from his daughter.
“I was aware of the good form, I had already understood it during the time trial," Velasco, who finished fourth in the individual time-trial of the Italian National Championships told Spazio Ciclismo post-race. "I knew I had to stay calm and so it was. Calmness is the virtue of the strong. You have to dare when you have to, not always, but when it's time. We did this today and everything went perfectly."
The 27-year-old sprinted to victory from a group of six riders that included some supposedly faster men, such as Matteo Trentin. "This shirt is a dream come true for me. I knew I could play it and in the final I felt that my legs were still good enough to try," he explains. “I couldn't ask for anything better, winning in front of my daughter. Knowing that she was there upon arrival certainly gave me a few more watts and I was able to give even more than was within my possibilities."
“I also wanted to make a dedication to many people who were close to me and are no longer here: my friend Giulio who always followed me, but also our masseur Umberto Inselvini," Velasco concludes. "A thought also for Gino Mäder, a colleague who left us doing this job we love."
