For the first time in her career,
Demi Vollering has been crowned the winner of the Dutch National Championship road race, taking victory in a brilliant solo attack.
“Our team is doing so well all season long. Then you also want to earn the jersey for the team. We just had a really nice opportunity here, especially with Lorena. I didn't really believe in it myself," said the
Team SD Worx rider in her post-race interview. "
I thought I didn't feel great, but that gap was still there with that Eva van Agt and Esmée Peperkamp. Then Mischa attacked and then I saw my moment and then I just went.”
“Then I thought: shit, now I have a hole, now I have to push too. The gap remained for ten seconds the whole time, then I heard from the car: okay, Demi stop," continues Vollering who's spectacular 2023 has seen her take victory at Liege-Bastogne-Liege, the Amstel Gold Race, Strade Bianche and more.
"But in the group they told me to keep driving. Then it also sounded from the car: if you see that the gap is growing, then just keep going," she says. "Then I thought: just full house and don't look back from now on."
