"We just say what we think" - Geraint Thomas past caring what people think about his comments on Watts Occurring podcast

Geraint Thomas and Luke Rowe's Watts Occurring podcast is one of the most entertaining listens in the cycling world today. Although some of the Welsh pair's comments have gone viral, Thomas is past caring about people's opinions.

“I think it comes with experience and age, being comfortable to say what you think and being straight to the point," says the former Tour de France winner in conversation with Rouleur. "I don’t really worry too much about what other people are going to think about it. With especially younger athletes, you always think people could be out to get you or twist your words. Right now, we just say what we think."

Whilst Thomas is often the one to catch the flak for his comments, it was actually his INEOS Grenadiers teammate who's idea it was to start the podcast. "Luke suggested it as a joke really, he said let's do a podcast so we can just say what we think and not have to do interviews," Thomas recalls. "It’s good to get that experience and confidence of speaking as well."

The fact they have no filter is what makes Watts Occurring so entertaining although, understandably that also raises concerns within the team. “I think sometimes they [INEOS Grenadiers press team] do get a bit nervous because we kind of forget that it goes out into the world. It feels like there's just us, but there are actually 40,000 people that are listening to it," Thomas explains. "But the team has been really good to be fair, they know what we're like and they're happy for us to be ourselves.”
