Dylan Groenewegen has had a rough couple of years and this
Tour de France, although far from ideal, saw him back to winning at the very highest level. It was a race of highs and lows for the Dutch sprinter, who has raced into second place at the Champs-Élysées.
"I think that the team was really impressive today, if you see, I signed seven months ago with the team and now we did one of the best lead outs. I’m really, really thankful for that, for this big chance," Groenewegen said at the end of the Tour, albeit disappointed with his runner-up spot in the final stage.
BikeExchange raced yesterday's finale in Paris almost to perfection, having Michael Matthews and Luka Mezgec deliver Dylan Groenewegen to Champs-Élysées in an ideal position, however with the Dutchman having to launch his sprint earlier than planned. “The team today was really brilliant, I went a bit too early but there was no other option I think," he explained.
"Sometimes you are lucky, today we are second, it’s good, but it’s not good enough, but the team was really strong". Jasper Philipsen ended up taking a dominant win, however the Dutchman managed to hold on for second place, a strong performance that he will be looking to replicate in the final months of the season.
"We have two stage victories for the team, and we are really proud, and now we’re going to celebrate. Today was second, not enough, but we are happy with this Tour," Groenewegen concluded. Although with some struggles this year, his win early in the race will have the pressure off his shoulder for the weeks to come.
