Julian Alaphilippe had made an appearance at the French national championships, but to many the
Tour de Wallonie was seen as the grand return of the World champion to racing, as he led
Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team with high ambitions.
The Frenchman won the opening stage of the race into familiar roads at the Mur de Huy, however during yesterday's stage he failed to be in the crucial moves of the race and had to let go of his GC ambitions. With the goal of a win accomplished however, it wasn't much to stress about as he looks to prepare the coming months.
However a new obstacle as been put ahead of him, as Alaphilippe tested positive for Covid-19 before the start of the third stage and did not take to the startline in Visé. The race is currently led by Robert Stannard of Alpecin-Deceuninck after two complicated hilly stages.
