Soudal - Quick-Step's Warre Vangheluwe has taken victory from a very tight bunch sprint finale to stage 2 at the 2024 Tour of Guangxi.
Although a second bunch sprint had been expected at the start of the day, heading into the final 10km, a very strong breakaway of six held a lead of around a minute over the peloton. Included in that lead group were notable names such as Dries De Bondt, Filip Maciejuk, Daan Hoole, Julien Vermote, Taco van der Hoorn and Martin Svrcek.
The peloton hadn't completely given up hope just yet though and at 5km to go, the gap was cut to only 35 seconds, with both a breakaway win and a sprint still a possibility. Finally, inside the final kilometre, the catch was completed. The drama wasn't though as a crash took out Jhonatan Narvaez. In the sprint for the line, Warre Vangheluwe took the surprise victory for Soudal - Quick-Step ahead of Max Kanter.
