Florian Lipowitz has also been a big beneficiary. After another strong performance in the stage 13 mountain time trial, the German now sits just 6 seconds off the podium on his Tour de France debut.
"Honestly, I was completely at my limit. The last two kilometres were incredibly tough... I had so much lactic acid in my legs. The final 50 meters felt like an eternity, but I’m really happy with my day," reflected Lipowitz in a post-stage interview after crossing the line. "I was able to give everything I had right to the line. I think I did a good job. It wasn’t my best day physically, but after how things went yesterday, I couldn’t be happier. I didn’t think at all about tomorrow’s stage, to be honest — I just went full gas all the way."
And with the podium so close and teammate
Primoz Roglic also seemingly coming into form after placing 3rd on stage 13, Lipowitz is understandably full of confidence. "Remco is a superstar, but now I think the focus has to be on Primoz and me," he insists.
"Primoz is very close, and he showed strong form today. There are still a lot of tough stages to come. We’ll have to take it day by day, but I think it’s good to have two riders high up in the general classification," concludes the 24-year-old. "It gives us more options for the coming days. Remco is very strong, and he was in a good mindset today too — he’s a real fighter."
