Miguel Ángel López found his best form, and on the slopes of Sierra Nevada he made the best out of it to attack the Vuelta a Espana hard and try to benefit from the high altitude which has so often favoured him.
“We lost a lot of time in the first week, but then we defended ourselves very well," López said after the finish. "The injury I had after the Giro, the lack of competition, takes its toll in the end. We met people who already brought rhythm. The important thing is that we have good feelings and now to rest”
López looked good as Jumbo-Visma looked to detonate the race at the bottom of Sierra Nevada, and halfway up the climb he launched an attack to bridge over to David De la Cruz in what was a strong tactical play by Astana Qazaqstan Team. The Colombian teamed up with Enric Mas to extend the gaps, and arrived third at the finish line. “It's a few seconds that are cut. It's important to be up front," he said.
"It's not over yet. There are quite hard stages. It's getting harder every day. We just have to think about the rest day and that we already have the last week," López concluded. He kept his sixth place in the overall classification, but is now however within 35 seconds of both Juan Ayuso and Carlos Rodríguez, which should make for an interesting battle in the final week of the race.
