Tremendous ride and display of power from @EvenepoelRemco, who takes his first Grand Tour stage victory in the Alicante time trial, tightening his grip on the general classification of #LaVuelta22.
The tenth stage of the Vuelta a Espana promised a tough battle in the streets of Alicante, as Remco Evenepoel stormed to take his first win of the race for Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team, and extended his lead in the red jersey even further.
The 30.9-kilometer time-trial saw several riders abandon before it, with notable exceptions of Sam Bennett, Ethan Hayter and Edoardo Affini. Covid-19 has taken several riders out of the race and thinned the list of candidates for the stage win, but Rémi Cavagna set a very strong benchmark early on of 34:18 minutes, having a comfortable lead over the riders that followed.
No-one managed to get close to the time until the GC riders started to come out, with Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel as expected putting in strong initial times. The likes of Pavel Sivakov, Simon Yates, Tao Geoghegan Hart and Miguel Ángel López put on strong times, whilst João Almeida was misguided off course in sight of the finish line.
Carlos Rodríguez put in a strong time only 22 seconds behind Cavagna, but Roglic came in to remove 12 seconds on the Frenchman's time. Enric Mas arrived 1:03 minutes behind Roglic, but soon Remco Evenepoel arrived to remove 48 seconds on the Slovenian, to extend his gap exponentially once again.
