Team Visma | Lease a Bike dominated Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne and Wout van Aert took a strong victory this Sunday; and right after the race fans were amused by interesting footage of a steward on a scooter taking the Belgian to the interview zone. He now told the story behind it.
Rik Bossuyt was the man who was in this position, in the past he has had colleagues get injured from the time spent at the finish line waiting for athletes and - knowing the interview area was a kilometer away - he had a scooter to take the Belgian rider towards the place he needed to for post-race obbligations. TV broadcast captured amusing footage of the duo riding through the streets of Kuurne, which went viral on social media.
Bossuyt explained how the scooter was bought for his day-to-day job but it was ideal for his role at Sunday's classic, and was quite surprised that the footage made him a famous figure for a few hours.
“I bought that scooter myself last week... It's nice that Wout can laugh about it, because I already felt a little uncomfortable with it," he told in words to Het Nieuwsblad. "It has to be about him, not me. I was just doing my job,"
It was actually a very funny moment in the coverage, with everyone from Robbie McEwen to Wout himself having a good laugh about it.
« went Viral » the media’s new favourite expression to lull more people into checking something out that needs more clicks. It can mean anything these days but I guess that’s ok after all, some viruses like covid and flu spread to billions whilst others like Ebola might reach dozens or hundreds at most. Pretty sure this clip was very strictly kept within a smallish subsection of cycling enthusiasts and practically no general public.
Come on, now. This is all in good fun, no need to take it so seriously.
