Mauricio Moreira of the
Sabgal / Anicolor team, winner of the 2022
Volta a Portugal, abandoned the race on stage 4.
The Uruguayan rider from the Águeda team didn't feel well on the climb to Famalicão da Serra and was supported by his teammates, but it was clear that something wasn't right with the Sabgal rider. Following this support, Luís Mendonça was warned by the race commissaires for putting his hands on his teammate's back. Shortly afterwards, Mauricio Moreira was receiving medical support when he stopped pedalling, put his foot down and fell to the ground completely exhausted.
An impressive image of sacrifice. Mauricio Moreira was taken to hospital and is an important casualty in the Águeda team's strategy for the Volta a Portugal. Watch the moment in the video below!
WTF. They should have immediately stopped him, that's not sacrifice, that's stupidity. Also this is the "doping" tour, it scarily raises the images of Simpson dying on the Ventoux
After the W52-FCPorto doping scandal in 2022, the biological passport became mandatory for all continental teams racing in Portugal.
And seems like it worked and the race is cleaner. The climbing speeds slowed since and foreign teams that come here are able to compete for the GC.
About Moreira today, seems like he was already unwell before the start of the stage and racing under 38°C does not help.
But why the team doctor or the race doctor not stop him, it could have had critical consequences. Imagine if he would have collapsed on a downhill at high speed, it would be catastrophic.
