In his very first race of 2024, Lotto Dstny's Florian Vermeersch's season was thrown into chaos when a crash at the Vuelta Ciclista a la Region de Murcia resulted in a fractured femur.
Now, in a video posted to Lotto Dstny's official YouTube channel, fans can get a behind the scenes look at the intensive recovery Vermeersch is being put through in order to recover strongly from a very nasty injury that has ruined many a cyclist's career.
“The most difficult moments are already behind us. The first ten days in the hospital in particular were very difficult: you have to lie in your bed and cannot do anything," says Vermeersch optimistically in the video. “Now I can move a bit again and I have some freedom again. It is already much better than the first two weeks.”
“If we can go back to full 100 percent load, we can make a timeline and see when I can return to competition. But I'm hoping sometime in July or August. I don't have a specific date in mind yet, because if it doesn't work out, it will be another disappointment. I try to spare myself that,” he also says.
