On the 2nd of April INEOS Grenadiers prepared an event called "Ride with Egan" which has been a successful return for Egan Bernal to the media, as he rode in the Zwift platform, after his return to the bike. On a video published by the British team surrounding the event, Bernal has given further insight on the accident.
"One moment I was going 60Km/h and the next I was lying on the ground. The only feeling was of not being able to breathe, the doctor arrived and immediately worked on the femur, it was broken and there was a big hemorrhage, so we had to put the femur back into place right there, while I was lying on the street. It was the worst pain I ever felt, but that saved my life," Bernal said.
Almost three months after the accident, Bernal is back to training at home back in Colombia, albeit with no real intensity yet. He has several times repeated his gratefulness for the support he's encountered, and was not hesitant of further appreciating them: "All the people that were there for me, that saw me on the stretcher, that help me bear the pain, that spoon-fed me, that even helped me going to the bathroom. All the amazing small things from people I will remember them forever."
"It is the best day of my life. To be able to ride my bike after the accident, to ride with my friends and family again was really special... In some way that made me feel important for the team again. I wanted to wear the team jersey again. I have always been proud of wearing the INEOS kit and to do this event with them makes me feel like a cyclist again," the Colombian added.
He went on to describe INEOS' support during his difficult recovery process, in which he successfully got back on his feet after almost 20 broken bones: "The team support has been key during these days, with messages of encouragement to calm me down. From the beginning they told me that the most important thing is that you feel good again, and then we will think on making you feel good as a rider again."
He not only left words of appreciation though, he has also left words of motivation towards the future: "That support is like the support of your family, I feel how they relate to my situation and their concern is important. And to all the fans of the team and to the people that were concerned about me, I just want to send them a big thank you and that there is more Egan to come. Wait for me, I'll be back racing soon."
