Several attacks began to split the bunch but it was with 35 kilometers to go that serious moves came, as Tim Wellens put the pressure on for UAE Team Emirates whilst favourites such as Jasper Philipsen and Caleb Ewan were dropped from the ever-thinning peloton.
A group of around 15 riders remained in front, including classics specialists, puncheurs and a few sprinters. With 14 kilometers to go UAE took advantage of it's two riders in front to attack at a turn, and
Filippo Baroncini launched a powerful attack that wasn't followed by anyone.
The Italian quickly built a strong gap as the chasing group couldn't organize itself well in the flat roads. After Juan Ayuso won at the Tour de Luxembourg today, the Italian rider took the second of the day, winning the Belgian classic arriving at the finish solo. Rick Pluimers attacked to second place on the day, whilst Rui Oliveira sealed the podium for UAE.
