The 2023 Giro d'Italia is currently being designed, and it's opening stages may see a start abroad. Within Italy however, there are strong indications that the region of Abruzzo may host the Grande Partenza, with some candidate cities that have applied for the opportunity.
Maurizio Formichetti, who is representing the region, has told Tuttobicibeb: “I would like to clarify that the entire region has signed up to organize the start of the Giro. So L'Aquila, Pescara and Chieti have also offered themselves," however with rumours that the city of Pescara is in a favourable position.
The report also points to the possibility of a time-trial around the city of L'Aquila. “In any case, we want to let you know that the Abruzzo exists and is available. We are prepared to sit down with Mauro Vegni and the RCS to organize the start of the Giro, or to be the start or finish place," he added.
There is no official decision yet however, and he said too that "also from abroad there are cities that, just like us, have offered themselves." These include the countries of Slovenia, Turkey, Slovakia, Belgium and Morocco. A decision is set to be made in the coming months.
