The earthquake has caused a change of plans for the Tour of Turkey, which was originally slated for April 23-30, and the organizers are currently in talks with the UCI to find a new date for the race.
The first week of February saw a catastrophic earthquake that caused injuries to millions and claimed the lives of more than 50,000 individuals. Consequently, the Tour of Antalya, originally planned for the second week of February, had to be cancelled.
Given the considerable economic and human toll inflicted by the earthquake, it is only logical to delay the race. The organizers are working to persuade UCI to shift the dates to October, the race is now having potential of still taking place this year.
"We did not want to organise our event in April because of the earthquake that hit our country so badly. With the support of the International Cycling Union, we were able to put it on the October race calendar", explains Emin Müftüoglu, president of the Turkish Cycling Federation.
