😅 The #TDF2022 got to the final rest day after a stage marked by crashes, a battle from 🇫🇷 @Ben_Thomas and the victory for 🇧🇪 @JasperPhilipsen! ⏩ Here are the highlights of the 15th stage
After being said that the Tour de France would be using up to 10.000 liters of water during stage 15 because of the severe heat conditions, across social media many were outraged with what appeared to be an excessive use amidst such climatic crisis - specially with a protest having taken place days before, and another during stage 15 itself albeit with minor consequences.
"It is obviously out of the question to water the course for the comfort of the riders. The reality is very different and only concerns the safety of the riders," said Pierre-Yves Thouault, deputy director of the Tour. He and André Bancala, the Tour's course manager, have talked to Le Parisien after the topic spread like wildfire, arguing that the original quote had been misunderstood.
Bancala explained: "10,000 litres is one capacity among many of a tank. We use a 2,000 litre tank. Water consumption is an essential subject given current events, but we are obviously not dealing with 200km of road. It wouldn't help."
"...The figure of 10,000 litres spilled is far-fetched. We are completely respectful of the environment and do not do just anything," he added. The water, which he said was around 350 liters for the day. The water was said to be used in specific sections where due to the temperature the tar risked melting, causing traction hazards for the riders, including spots near the finish in Carcassonne.
