Tom Dumoulin had announced his retirement from cycling at the end of 2022, but the Dutchman has taken to social media to admit that he will no longer be racing in 2022 and will retire with immediate effect.
The decision came after motivational and psychological issues over the last few years, and his struggle to return to his qualities as a climber and stage-racer has seen him transform into a pure time-trialist over the last few seasons. He had a prolonged break from cycling in 2021, and came back to ride a second place at the Olympic time-trial event.
His final race was the Clasica San Sebastian, where he did not make it to the finish. He had stated he was preparing for the time-trial World championships, however has decided to call it early, and has retired already. He will likely keep having a role within cycling, perhaps as a performance manager for Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux.
Dumoulin was one of the most successful Dutch riders of recent time. Having won the 2017 Giro d'Italia he also became one of the most successful Grand Tour riders of the past generation. Inbetween his palmarès there have also been wins at the time-trial World championships, the BinkBank Tour, and stages in all Grand Tours which include time-trials, mountainous days and hilly days aswell.
