To ride or not to ride the Giro d'Italia? Wout van Aert plot takes another turn

The Giro d'Italia and Wout van Aert have been on the center of attention for several weeks, ever since Gazzetta dello Sport reported that the Belgium would be present in Italy. No confirmation have been given and the story keeps on twisting and turning.

In an interview with Mundo Ciclístico, a Colombian news outlet which got words from the Belgian over the past weekend as he was at the Giro de Rigo, Wout van Aert said: “I love the atmosphere, the food, the warmth and the expressiveness of the Italians. What is my main goal for 2024? Mainly the Giro d'Italia."

This comes as a big affirmation that the Belgian could be pointing his efforts towards May, before making a specific preparation towards the Olympic Games, as was rumoured. It is a plan that seemingly makes sense however there is an unexpected twist.

Van Aert's words were given over the weekend of the event in Colombia. This Tuesday Red Bull Belgium shared a video of van Aert announcing a running event in Breda on the 5th of May. The Giro begins on the 4th of May. It is uncertain then what is the current plan, it's likely that within Jumbo-Visma the decisions are still yet to be taken despite the words that come out.
