Wout van Aert signs up for charity running event on May 5th, 2024, casting doubt on likelihood of Giro d'Italia debut

Many reports in the press have rumoured that Wout van Aert is set to make his Giro d'Italia debut in 2024, potentially leading the general classification charge of Jumbo-Visma. Now though, the Belgian has cast doubt on this talk.

Via his and his sponsor RedBull's official Instagram accounts, van Aert advertises a charity running event that is scheduled for May 5th, 2024. The key fact to note here is that the date the race takes place is actually the day after the Grand Depart of the Giro d'Italia.

"Hello, this is Wout van Aert," he begins. "On May 5th, we'll run the Wings for Life World Run in Breda. It's an event where thousands of Belgian and Dutch people will run together for a good cause. We will run for those who can't, people in a wheelchair with a spinal cord injury. Those people really need out support. It's a worldwide event and just a super fun event. Don't hesitate, May 5th, Breda, see you there!"

Undoubtedly a worthy cause, van Aert deserves a lot of praise for his charity work. Even the superhuman Belgian can't be in two places at once though, meaning the Giro d'Italia dream is surely over.
