Peter Sagan, who was once thought of as the world's best cyclist, is now only a shadow if his past self, but his name and actions still draw a lot of attention among the fans and media. For Vive le Vélo, documentary maker Sammy Neyrinck exchanged few words with the three-time world champion, seven-times green jersey winner and one of the best classic riders of past decade.
"If you win a lot, then many wins are special," is the Slovak's answer when asked about the most beautiful triumph for him personally. "But the biggest are definitely my world titles. Winning the rainbow jersey three times in a row was something special. I won the Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix in that jersey and that also means something."
"But my stage victories in the Tour and the green jerseys won also were something beautiful," the 33-year old rider makes it clear that it is actually difficult to choose. Does Sagan have any regrets? "I think there's no such thing as regret. Even if you go through something bad, you should learn from the lesson life gives you. But in the future you have to try to be a better person," he says. "You can't change the past."
"It's also about having fun while cycling," he tells Neyrinck, who then asks him if his latest Tour de France feels like a farewell tour. "This year may not be my best year in terms of results, but there are still people who come for an autograph or a photo. That is unbelievable," said a slightly emotional Sagan.
