The temperatures sat around 35 degrees yesterday in the Massif Central at the
Tour de France. Many riders struggled with the heat including
Wout van Aert,
Jumbo-Visma's DS reveals the Belgian's feedback after a terrible day on the bike.
"He literally said: this is the worst day I've ever had in the Tour. Wout just had a bad day, just not a good stage,"
Merijn Zeeman said in De Avondetappe last night. "Last year he took the green, two stages and everything went well. This year it's just a little less successful, but the point is a bit: everyone mentions Wout and Mathieu, in all team buses."
The two stars take on the spotlight, specially after accidentally riding away from the peloton yesterday whilst chasing down the breakaway. Van Aert attacked early in the day, cracked, and then put on a chase throughout the day, unclear the reason why this was. Van Aert was also rumored to be leaving the race, although he has since dismissed that. It was a very busy day for the Belgian at the Tour, as can be said for half of the stages so far.
"He has a lot of opposition in many stages, and then of course it becomes increasingly difficult to win. He now has nine in the Tour, but this year it just didn't work out. Then the trick is to stay relaxed, but we also have to help him with that. It is of course a top athlete who wants nothing more than to win competitions," Zeeman concluded.
