Prior to the start of stage 10, rumours began to swirl over the potentially imminent departure from the Tour de France of Wout van Aert. Following the stage, his team leader Jonas Vingegaard was quick to shut down those rumours.
"I can tell you that Wout isn't going anywhere. He stays here with us," laughed the overall leader of the race when approached with the question in a post-stage interview. It was Lidl-Trek rider Mattias Skjelmose who brought these rumours to a wider audience when he claimed "I've heard rumours that Wout is going home," in an interview with Danish station TV2.
For Vingegaard, stage 10 was another safely negotiated day to tick off the calendar. Maintaining his 17-second lead over Tadej Pogacar in the general classification. Nevertheless, it was an incredibly tough day in the saddle under the beating sun and with a very quick pace.
“When you look at the profile of the ride, you knew it would lend itself to a solid course. The heat made it even harder, but I can handle it well. So I think it can stay that way," he says before referencing the early stress when Tadej Pogacar tried to sneak into an early move. “I had to follow him there, but then the other teams took over pretty quickly. With that it was relaxed again quite quickly."
