An impressive Thibau Nys came close to a stage win at the Tour de Romandie although afterwards the Trek - Segafredo rider expressed his disappointment at not being able to take the win.
"I'm kind of disappointed because I had the legs to win," the 20-year-old Belgian told Eurosport afterwards in his post-stage interview. “We had a tailwind and it went up slightly, then it is difficult to close a gap in the sprint. The final was a bit tricky to position me, but I got some good help from the team to get up front. Then it was a matter of choosing the right wheel.”
Although Nys was unable to beat Soudal - Quick-Step's Ethan Vernon in the final push for the line, his second-placed finish is nevertheless impressive for the young cyclocross star. “I can't complain about my sprint, because the power was there. I think I missed one or two places to win. But this is nice to start with,” he says. “It feels double, because I felt very good.”
Tomorrow's stage two has more climbing and Nys casts doubt on whether he'll be able to repeat his performance. "We will see. Today I felt good on the climb. If I have another day like that tomorrow, that's promising. But I think I will feel these efforts tomorrow.”
