Caleb Ewan has told reporters that he has recovered from the slight injuries he sustained on the crash on the opening day of the race when he was sprinting to a top place, but has failed to contest the sprint on today's stage to Balatonfüred.
He was, together with Mark Cavendish and Arnaud Démare, the big favourite for the third stage of the race. Whilst the latter two finished first and second, the Australian found himself out of position in the final kilometer, and had no support to return to the front of the peloton.
"I just had to launch my sprint from too far behind. I am very disappointed. Luckily my legs felt really good and there are lots of opportunities to come," Ewan said at the end of the stage.
He had the speed, but his poor positioning proved too much for him to contest the top places on the day. He finished eighth, distant from the win, but he will have more opportunities to add to his five wins in the past few years.
