Egan Bernal has suffered countless fractures in a crash suffered back in January of this year, however his recovery is on track, further proven by a successful surgery in which he had metal removed from his knee.
Local news outlet EFE have talked to the doctor who did surgery on Egan Bernal, who has said: “I did a knee arthroscopy. I went in with the camera in his knee to look at the joint. It was confirmed that the fracture has been repaired. That was on Thursday. I saw that his meniscus, his ligaments, were healthy.”
Bernal travelled back to Colombia earlier this month, choosing not to race the final appointments of the season he was expected to ride at Cro Race and perhaps Il Lombardia, in order to have metal from his knee removed, and prioritize his ongoing recovery and conditioning.
"It will feel better now than before while cycling, because these materials can cause irritation and pain in the knee," he concluded. The off-season will be long, but Bernal is expected to return to racing at the start of the coming season, although goals are understandably very vague at the time being.
