Seeing his compatriot and teammate Yevegniy Fedorov win the under-23 World Championships Road Race,
Alexey Lutsenko did his best to replicate the success in the Elite race. He made all the crucial moves, but couldn't keep up with Remco Evenepoel when it mattered the most.
"It was a really long and hard day," Lutsenko told reporters at the end of the day. "I went with Remco, but after six hours of speed, my legs exploded when he accelerated on the climb, and then there was nothing left." Lutsenko was part of the large move that took off with 60 kilometers to go, and then was the only rider who managed to keep up with the attack from the Belgian with 33 kilometers to go.
The duo worked together, and whilst Evenepoel rode to the win, Lutsenko was dropped in the penultimate lap at Mount Pleasant. "I went deep to join and also tried to make the gap myself and I had a little reserve of power but it wasn't enough. Today Remco was just too strong," he said. He kept riding solo through the circuit until he was caught by the chasing group with just a few kilometers to go, and within sight of the line the peloton also caught up. He rode into 24th place on the day.
"It's impressive to win like this right after to have won the Vuelta. Chapeau," he concluded. Carrying good form, Lutsenko is expected to go on and conclude the season at the Italian Autumn Classics.
