The World Championships were the biggest story of the day as Remco Evenepoel stormed to the win in Wollongong, however the night before there was intense drama in the background, as
Mathieu van der Poel was arrested following an altercation in the Dutch team's hotel.
Wielerflits have compiled the reports into the story that has seen the Dutchman's tilt at the World Championships ruined. He is said to have gone to bed at 9pm local time in a hotel room with his partner, with two girls - ages 13 and 14 - having spent time in the hallway and repeatedly knock on his door. Tired from the situation, 1:30 hours later van der Poel went to the hallway, and allegedly pushed both, causing small injuries in one of the children.
The police was later called and around 00:00 local time van der Poel had been arrested, and according to Alpecin-Deceuninck manager Christoph Roodhooft, he spent several hours in jail, where his passport was taken and he was released on condition that he would return to be be heard on the 27th of September - this coming Tuesday.
Van der Poel was released and returned to his hotel at 04:00 but has told Sporza the next morning that he had very little sleep. Although this might have not caused much harm initially, the whole situation clearly took a heavy toll on van der Poel, who abandoned the race 35 kilometers in without giving a sign of being able to compete for a result. More updates are soon to come regarding the case.
