The director of the Giro d'Italia, after bowing to the riders: "They have activated the 'extreme weather conditions' protocol"

Mauro Vegni, the director of the Giro d'Italia, has been speaking to the media as he tries to explain the causes of the reduction of stage 13 of the Corsa Rosa. Just a few days ago he stood firm when defending the stages of more than 200 kilometres. Today he gave in to the riders and amputated one of the best stages of the 2023 Giro route. He explained it like this:

"The riders have wanted to activate the 'extreme weather conditions' protocol so we have met and we have tried to come to an agreement because we have tried to give the riders some of what they wanted, but we have tried to keep the important part of the stage intact, as it should be, that's why we kept the climbs to the Croix de Couer and Crans-Montana. The problem was the mood of the cyclists with the cold on the descent in San Bernardo. The weather conditions are very difficult this year."
